The City of Kovno

After nearly being led astray by the freethinkers of Brisk, the fourteen-year-old Zolf was sent away by his parents to the much more distant and much stricter Yeshiva in Slobodka. The Town of Slobodka was a poor, sleepy Lithuanian village that happened to be the home of four great Yeshivas.
